Dr. Maureen Tshabalala is a public health practitioner with over 20 years of experience in global and public health, with emphasis on Science of Improvement (SOI) and Health Systems Strengthening (HSS). She is currently an Independent Consultant (Faculty) for Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and other organizations, managing diverse projects and portfolios. As of July 2025, she was a Senior Director for Global Delivery at IHI, where she worked for 13 years, led and managed IHI's diverse improvement projects funded by various donors and worked with myriad partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
She is a trained improvement science specialist (Improvement Advisor) and has extensively led several improvement collaboratives in multiple countries. She is a content contributor and teaches IHI's in-person and virtual professional development programs, globally. Her Quality Improvement (QI) career began at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), where she worked as a QI Coordinator and later a QI Manager for five provinces. Dr. Tshabalala holds several qualifications, including a Master’s degree in Public Health from University of South Africa, and a PhD in Public Health from Walden University, USA. She resides with her family in Johannesburg, South Africa.
